It is about 3 years old and gets hot even with just a browser open.

Check the task manager for a process using lots of CPU. Browser tabs with video are common culprits.
Use it on a hard surface, not a bed or sofa. Blocked intake vents make the fan work much harder.
Clean the vents with compressed air. Dust build-up is the number one cause after a couple of years.
